History of Rolfing®

Rolfing® was pioneered
by Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D

Rolfing® Structural Integration and Rolf Movement® are the theory and practice of organizing the human being in the field of gravity.

Rolfing® was developed by Dr. Ida Rolf here in the United States in the early 1900s. Dr. Rolf was a Ph.D. in biochemistry and well studied in mathematics, atomic physics, and homeopathic medicine.

In the 1930s, dissatisfied with available medical treatments, Dr. Rolf studied Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Tantric Yoga, Alexander Technique, and consciousness.

In the 1940s, much of her work was with chronically disable people and those who were unable to find help elsewhere. She also worked with those who had been told by doctors, “There’s nothing more we can do, you’ll just have to learn to live it.”

Rolfing® became quite well-known in the 1960s because people realized it profoundly improved how one felt, how one moved, and one’s experience of body, self, and life.

Dr. Rolf established The Rolf Institute® of Structural Integration in Boulder, Colorado in 1970.

Dr. Rolf passed on in 1979.

Only those who are trained (and recognized as a Member in Good Standing) by the Rolf Institute® of Structural Integration are authorized to use the term Rolfing® and to use the title of Rolfer.
